Security guards hailed as heroes after thwarting knife attack on 12-year-old at Valkea shopping center in Oulu
On June 13, a typical workday turned into a harrowing incident at the Valkea shopping center in Oulu. Security personnel witnessed an attack when Juhani Sebastian Lämsä, of neo-Nazi background, unexpectedly assaulted a 12-year-old boy with a knife. The attack occurred in a busy area of the shopping mall and left the boy badly injured.
Pyry Mitrunen, one of the security guards, described the moment when he saw Lämsä strike the child multiple times before attempting to stab another. Realizing the urgency of the situation, Mitrunen called for help from his colleague Aatu Röntynen while pursuing the attacker. Röntynen rushed to attend to the injured boy. Mitrunen recounted his determination, stating that the attacker had to be stopped at all costs.
After turning towards Mitrunen in a nearby park, Lämsä threatened his life while still wielding the knife. Ignoring his own safety, Mitrunen managed to follow the attacker to a parking ramp, where chaotic moments ensued. The situation became a blur until additional helpers and another security guard arrived on the scene.
The actions of Mitrunen and Röntynen have been hailed as heroic, with authorities suggesting that their quick thinking likely saved lives. Both guards received accolades at the Finnish Security Awards, acknowledging their bravery.
Even months after the event, both men reflect on the lasting impact of that day, noting how it has made them more vigilant at work and in their daily lives. They emphasize the crucial element of teamwork and community support during such crises.
A trial regarding the attack commenced in October, with prosecutors seeking a 10-year sentence for Lämsä, who faces serious charges including attempted murder. Another stabbing incident at the same shopping center involving a 15-year-old also awaits legal proceedings.
