The National Land Survey is advancing remote sensing techniques for precise terrain investigations. This technology facilitates detailed analysis, but with transparency comes inherent risks, including potential misuse and vulnerabilities in data systems. Certain data is only available in limited amounts to safeguard critical infrastructure.

The Land Survey’s Geospatial Data Center has been exploring innovative remote sensing methods, utilizing laser scanning to obtain precise 3D data of various objects. Although the new technology yields accurate information, its dissemination presents risks that are being acknowledged within the agency. Data privacy has gained focus in recent years, particularly following incidents of suspicious activity around water and electricity facilities. Additionally, disruptions have impacted aviation and maritime navigation this year.

The Land Survey’s laser scanning efforts with drones allow for detailed studies of forests, monitoring pests, dead trees, and selective logging, as well as tracking wildfires. Most images and scans are publicly available, except in restricted airspace and military domains. Information can be accessed via the Land Survey’s website.

According to a leading expert, technical details of critical infrastructure should not be public information due to their minimal utility for average users. Safeguards for water management systems and security arrangements for buildings are deemed crucial. The necessity for these protections is supported by public disclosure laws.

While the Land Survey values openness given that the information is produced using public funds, there are risks associated with its potential misuse. Experts categorize these risks into three primary areas: inappropriate use of open data, misidentification using false data to access licensed information, and exploiting vulnerabilities in data systems. The retention of activity logs aids in monitoring misuse, although tracing offenders can be challenging.

Officials encourage citizens to report any concerns about sensitive information directly to data owners rather than posting publicly, highlighting that safety is a shared responsibility.
