Sweden parties agree on citizenship changes amid security concerns in revised Tidö Agreement

In a recent development, the ruling parties in Sweden, along with the Sweden Democrats, have reached a consensus on seven points related to the revised Tidö Agreement. Among the proposals is a plan to tighten the criteria for Swedish citizenship. The participating parties emphasized the importance of ensuring that citizenship is not granted to individuals who pose a threat to Swedish interests.

Before the new requirements are enacted, the parties intend to take immediate action against the issuance of citizenship under the existing laws, citing concerns over national security vulnerabilities. They suggest that until the updated legislation is in place, measures should be undertaken to limit the granting of further Swedish citizenships.

Although the specific actions to be implemented have not been detailed, reports suggest that the government may direct the migration authority to conduct more rigorous security assessments, potentially prolonging the citizenship application process.

Additionally, the parties have come to an agreement regarding exemptions related to a controversial reporting obligation, often referred to as the “informant law” by critics. The Sweden Democrats perceive this compromise as a setback but have also pointed to other accomplishments in the negotiations.

As discussions continue, updates will be provided on the progression of these legislative changes and their implications for the Swedish society.
