Court revises ruling on arson cases involving Robert Emil Strömsholm in Tampere
The Turku Court of Appeal has revised a previous ruling regarding a series of arson cases in Tampere. The court annulled one of the damage incidents from 2022 and downgraded another serious offense to a standard damage claim. However, the five-and-a-half-year prison sentence for the convicted individual, Robert Emil Strömsholm, remains unchanged.
In February, the Pirkanmaa District Court found Strömsholm guilty of 20 offenses, which included 13 counts of serious damage, five counts of damage, one count of arson, and one aggravated arson charge, the most severe of the offenses. He was sentenced to five and a half years in prison and ordered to pay approximately €550,000 in damages to the victims, plus interest.
Strömsholm sought to have all charges dismissed and requested release from any compensation obligations. Alternatively, he argued for a reduction of the severity of the charges to either standard damage or arson, as well as a reduction in the prison sentence and the compensation amounts.
The court maintained a strong belief in the prosecutor’s case against Strömsholm, noting inconsistencies and lack of detail in his account of events. The annulled damage incident involved a fire from September 2022, and the court found no sufficient evidence linking Strömsholm to the scene. Reasonable doubt was established regarding his guilt in that case.
Regarding the conversion of the aggravated damage charge, the court determined that the evidence did not support that the damage exceeded the amount acknowledged by Strömsholm, which was quantified at €15,500, deemed not excessively high.
Pirkanmaa District Court had previously placed an estimated €200,000 worth of Strömsholm’s property under a precautionary seizure, which will remain until compensations have been settled or otherwise determined. The total damages from the fires reportedly reached hundreds of thousands of euros in the Tampere area, with evacuations required in certain incidents.
