Finnish adults revive childhood passion for toys with rising collectible market
In Finland, a unique trend has emerged among adults who have maintained their passion for toys from childhood, often spending large sums on rare collectibles. The multi-billion euro global market for toy collecting is reflected in the activities of Finnish enthusiasts who reveal the reasons behind their costly hobbies.
Among these collectors is Tiina Torikka, whose extensive Pokémon card collection is reportedly worth over €85,000. With around 20,000 cards stored meticulously, she began her serious collecting in 2011 and actively participates in tournaments both locally and abroad. The camaraderie she experiences at these events is significant, as she meets fans of all ages, showcasing that the love for Pokémon transcends generations. One of her most prized possessions is a Gold Star Pikachu card valued at €3,000 due to its rarity and condition.
Another collector, Mikko Luotokoski, found joy in his childhood memories by amassing figures from the “Masters of the Universe” series. His most treasured figure, Scare Glow, can fetch around €250 if in good condition. Luotokoski’s collection emphasizes personal enjoyment rather than investment, with figures often exceeding mere aesthetic appreciation.
Minna-Riikka Murto’s collection of the beloved character Ihaa also illustrates the diverse nature of toy collecting. With more than 90 variations of Ihaa, her collection reflects her emotional attachment to the character while demonstrating the aesthetic appeal that drives collectors.
As demand for nostalgic toys rises, it sparks fascination among enthusiasts, each driven by personal connections and the thrill of finding coveted pieces. This trend showcases a vibrant community where childhood memories live on through cherished collectibles.
