Finnish Interior Minister Mari Rantanen has secured the trust of the parliament with a vote of 119 to 52, with no abstentions and a total of 28 representatives absent. This vote of confidence took place just one day after the motion for a no-confidence vote was submitted.
Opposition parties, specifically the Left Alliance and the Greens, expressed their disapproval of Rantanen on Thursday, citing concerns regarding the preparations for next year’s refugee quota in Finland. The Equality Ombudsman has indicated that the political leadership of the Ministry of the Interior is likely to include guidance for the 2025 refugee quota that could result in discrimination based on religion.
An email obtained through a request by Yle revealed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs perceived a need to address the Ministry of the Interior’s political leadership’s plan to direct the quota primarily towards Christians, even as recently as early October. Rantanen has consistently denied any systematic discrimination related to these policies.
