Volcanic eruption threatens infrastructure in Svartsengi region of Iceland

A volcanic eruption near the Sundhnúksgígar area poses a threat to critical infrastructure in the Svartsengi region, which supplies hot water to the residents and businesses of the Suðurnes area. Authorities have warned local customers to be prepared for potential service disruptions concerning hot water delivery. Residents are advised to conserve hot water and maintain warmth in their homes.

Efforts have been underway to reinforce protective barriers and implement cooling measures for the lava flow since late last night. According to the cooling manager, there have been no noticeable changes in the lava’s height near the barriers, and the overall situation remains stable. Air quality in the vicinity of Grindavík has been impacted by gas emissions from the eruption, with ongoing monitoring indicating unhealthy levels for sensitive individuals due to prevailing northeast winds.

Collaborative efforts among various emergency services have been vital in managing the situation effectively. Intensive work is being conducted to prepare for cooling measures to shield the infrastructure in Svartsengi and the nearby Blue Lagoon from impending lava flow. So far, the natural geothermal energy production remains stable, although electricity generation has been temporarily halted due to the proximity of lava to main power lines.

Preparations for cooling operations are in full swing, with plans to increase protective barriers in specific areas where the lava is encroaching. Monitoring teams are on alert, and community members are encouraged to stay informed through official channels about any changes in service capabilities as conditions evolve.
