The vessel “Yi Peng 3” was present in the Baltic Sea when underwater cables were severed. Currently, Sweden’s maritime patrol ship KBV 001 Poseidon is monitoring the area, operating around 300 kilometers away from the Chinese ship. The Poseidon is one of Sweden’s largest environmental protection vessels, typically engaged in tasks related to environmental rescue and maritime surveillance. However, its specific mission at this time remains unclear.

A representative from the Swedish Coast Guard confirmed that they are assisting authorities with the investigation into the cable incidents, stating, “We are continuously monitoring the maritime situation.” They are also in communication with German and Danish forces, who have vessels nearby.

The “Yi Peng 3” has been under observation by the Danish Navy since at least Tuesday and has not moved since then. The vessel is located in the Danish exclusive economic zone, but not within its territorial waters.

In light of these events, researchers have raised alarms about potential security vulnerabilities surrounding underwater cables. Authorities are thoroughly investigating the situation following suspicions of sabotage involving the cable cuts in the Baltic Sea. Reports indicate heightened attention to maritime movements in the region, with officials expressing concerns regarding the implications of such incidents for maritime safety and security.
