Seismic activity is currently affecting the Reykjanes Peninsula, leading to precautionary measures being taken to protect local electrical facilities. Emergency services and the national utility company are working to safeguard two power stations located along the Svartsengi power line from potential lava flows.

Local emergency responders were alerted around 6 PM and are engaged in efforts to cool the lava in a bid to halt its progression. However, they are facing challenges in accessing water to aid their operations, as noted in a recent announcement on social media.

A spokesperson for the utility company indicated that no power is currently flowing through the Svartsengi line, which was shut down earlier due to the seismic events. The ongoing protective measures include elevating the power pylons to shield them from any advancing lava.

Future actions involve reinforcing the bases of these pylons, with ongoing earthworks progressing smoothly. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and emphasize their commitment to ensuring the safety of the local community and the operational integrity of the power grid.

In light of the situation, the regional emergency management team has shifted their readiness level from emergency to alert status as they continue to manage the evolving circumstances.
