Weather warnings issued as significant snowfall expected across Norway’s Troms and Finnmark regions
As winter approaches, experts advise that drivers should have switched to winter tires by now, emphasizing the importance of proper vehicle preparation for impending weather conditions. A significant snowfall is anticipated across several regions in Norway beginning Friday, with Troms and Finnmark expected to bear the brunt of the storm. Some areas might see accumulations of up to 60 centimeters of snow over the next few days.
The first substantial snow of the winter is attributed to a cold front from Siberia that has moved into the region from Finland. This shift has resulted in frigid temperatures, dipping as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius in the highlands of Finnmark and minus 21 degrees in Gudbrandsdalen.
With the incoming weather system, a northwest wind will bring additional snow to Møre and Romsdal as well as Trøndelag, where up to 25 centimeters is forecasted. Areas south of Stad have also issued warning alerts as they prepare for 5 to 15 centimeters of snow.
This latest weather pattern will provide the first significant snowfall for many, especially in regions where winter has been mild thus far. However, for those in southern Norway eager for their first ski trip of the season, urgency is advised. Warmer temperatures expected on Sunday may melt away much of the new snow, although cooler conditions could return later in the week. Meanwhile, in northern parts of the country, colder weather is set to persist, particularly in Troms and Finnmark, with snow remaining on the ground longer.
As temperatures rise towards the weekend, treacherous driving conditions may arise due to transitioning precipitation from snow to sleet and then rain, posing risks of icy roads, particularly in mountainous areas.
