Shooting incident in Kiuruvesi leads to ongoing investigation by Eastern Finland police
Authorities are providing more details about a shooting incident that occurred in Kiuruvesi in October, resulting in the death of a 40-year-old local man believed to be the shooter. On October 22, police received an emergency call reporting that a man had barricaded himself in his home and was firing shots at a car parked outside. Multiple rounds struck the vehicle.
In response, police cordoned off the area. During the standoff, the man discharged dozens of shots inside the house, with some bullets hitting the ground near the exterior of the building. The situation concluded with the discovery of the deceased suspect inside the residence.
Initially, police treated the incident as an attempted murder and a threat to public safety. However, they later determined that the man did not fire at responding officers, leading to the decision not to pursue charges of attempted murder at this time. With regard to the shooting of the car, the investigation explored potential charges of attempted manslaughter, although no evidence supporting this has emerged so far.
Riitta Antikainen, a crime commissioner with the Eastern Finland police, noted that a bystander was present outside, which contributed to the investigation into manslaughter charges. She confirmed that police have ruled out any intent on the part of the suspect to target the vehicle or the individual outside.
The investigation is ongoing, as authorities seek to clarify the sequence of events. Despite the suspect’s death, officials express their commitment to completing the preliminary investigation, acknowledging that absolute clarity may never be achieved. No other individuals are suspected in the incident, and there were no reported injuries to bystanders.
