Swedish prime minister discusses support for Ukraine ahead of Harpsund meeting
The United States has emerged as the largest military supporter of Ukraine, playing a pivotal role in helping the country withstand Russia’s invasion for 1,000 days. As political dynamics shift in the U.S., European leaders are bracing for potential changes in support. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has refrained from making predictions about the implications of his recent conversation with Donald Trump.
Kristersson explained that he accurately conveyed Sweden’s perspective on the conflict, emphasizing why Ukraine is essential not just for its own security but also for the transatlantic alliance. He acknowledged that while Trump showed understanding, it does not guarantee that the U.S. will make decisions aligned with European expectations.
Looking ahead, Kristersson underscored the need to empower Ukraine, particularly if negotiations with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin become a reality. He asserted that any talks must hinge on Ukraine’s terms and highlighted the importance of ensuring Ukraine is strong enough to determine when it is ready to seek peace.
Next week, Nordic and Baltic prime ministers, along with Poland, will convene at Harpsund to discuss additional actions they might take to bolster support for Ukraine. Kristersson noted that while these nations collectively represent the second-largest military contributor, they must remain prepared to provide even more assistance as the situation evolves.
The ongoing conflict underscores the continuing challenges in international relations and the pressing need for a coordinated response among allies.
