Concerns are growing regarding the financial health of the Kanta-Häme welfare region, which is reportedly facing a deficit of approximately 134 million euros over a two-year period. This deficit needs to be eliminated by the end of 2026, and must be mitigated through surplus budgets.

Earlier this autumn, six welfare regions burdened by financial issues came under closer governmental oversight, with Kanta-Häme being among those monitored. The region’s officials express optimism that, barring unforeseen developments, they will identify sufficient strategies to restore financial balance within the next two years.

According to a recent statement, Kanta-Häme aims to stabilize its finances between 2025 and 2026. However, current legislation mandates that any deficits accumulated in 2023 and 2024 must be addressed by the 2026 deadline, necessitating substantial budget surpluses in the coming two years.

Despite having implemented two previous financial recovery programs, significantly more work lies ahead. The tight timeline for achieving balance pressures the region to find new cost-saving measures. The authorities have already begun evaluating potential methods to curb expenditure, with decisions to be made alongside budget discussions.

The welfare area director, Olli Naukkarinen, is expected to present new proposals influenced by an upcoming financial forecast for 2024 and insights into the impacts of suggested savings measures. Changes to hospital operations and the adjustment of caregiver support to meet legal requirements are among the options on the table, along with potentially expanding external home care services.

Moreover, the financial outlook is significantly impacted by changes in state funding and legislation, particularly regarding cuts to care guarantees and increases in healthcare user fees, all of which add more pressure on the region’s budget. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
