Lunch spots in Finland are experiencing a notable decline in patrons, particularly on Mondays and Fridays, where some establishments report up to a 30% drop in lunchtime customers compared to mid-week figures. This shift poses challenges for restaurant management, particularly in forecasting food quantities, as the pressure of serving customers is now concentrated into just three days a week.

Many lunch restaurants have struggled to adapt to these changes, with remote work becoming increasingly common post-pandemic. According to recent studies, a significant portion of the workforce now telecommutes, with statistics showing that last year, about 35% of employed individuals engaged in remote work, many for at least half of their work hours. In light of these trends, the restaurant sector faces its most profound challenge stemming from the pandemic: reduced foot traffic.

Companies operating staff canteens, particularly those owned by the likes of Compass Group, have noted that many have had to close due to persistent drops in customer numbers. The dynamics vary, as some workers continue to dine out regularly, while others frequently opt for home lunches.

Simultaneously, restaurants are grappling with rising operational costs, which further complicates the issue. The authorities have announced a modest increase in lunch benefits to account for these pressures, yet the rates remain significantly lower than previous adjustments. Consequently, there is rising pressure to increase lunch prices, with restaurant operators acknowledging that any considerable hikes must be carefully managed to avoid alienating customers.
