A volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula appears to have reached its peak. The eruption, which began around 23:14 on the Sundhnúks volcanic system, is accompanied by a series of strong earthquakes that started just before midnight. The fissure is approximately three kilometers long, stretching from Sýlingarfell northward past Stóra-Skógfell.

This current eruption is significantly smaller than the one that occurred in August, and the Icelandic Meteorological Office has noted a lack of increased seismic activity in the weeks leading up to this event, which differs from previous eruptions. The lava flow is moving towards the west, away from the town of Grindavík, ensuring that infrastructure outside the area is not in immediate danger.

Evacuations in Grindavík and at the Blue Lagoon were executed smoothly, with local officials reporting the successful relocation of residents and guests to other accommodations. The volcanic fissure is reported to be approximately 3 kilometers long, and the lava is about 500 meters from the Grindavík road.

Experts remarked on the atypical nature of this eruption, highlighting its sudden onset with little precursor activity. They stress the importance of monitoring the situation closely to assess any changes in lava flow direction and potential risks to nearby communities. Current winds are favorable as they are expected to blow volcanic gases out to sea, minimizing health risks to the population.

As precautions remain in place, officials continue to operate a coordination center to respond to the evolving situation and to maintain public safety amid this geological event.
