Satakunta welfare region ceases customer service at Satasairaala scientific library amid political outcry
The Satakunta welfare region has ceased customer service at the Satasairaala scientific library as part of its cost-saving measures. This library has been a key resource for staff aiming to enhance their professional and scientific knowledge, particularly supporting medical professionals who conduct research alongside their clinical practice. Additionally, it has served students undergoing internships.
In response, numerous politicians within the Satakunta regional council, spanning different political parties, have expressed significant concerns regarding the library’s service cessation. The initiative, spearheaded by Petri Salminen of the Left Alliance, has garnered support from the entire Left Alliance council group and notable figures such as MP Mari Kaunistola. They emphasize the critical nature of the library’s services for the effectiveness of the healthcare system.
However, the welfare region’s management contests this perspective. In their response to the initiative, they clarify that while the customer service of the scientific library has been discontinued, the library itself remains operational. The management underlines that databases are still being updated in collaboration with Sotevirtuaalikirjasto, and both researchers and students can access library services provided by universities and colleges. Additionally, public library interloan and advisory services are available to everyone.
The initiators argue that shutting down the library contradicts the strategic objectives of the Satakunta welfare area, which is committed to advancing research and education. The regional council is scheduled to discuss the matter in the coming week. It is worth noting that the library’s former information specialist and knowledge service secretary have already transitioned to new roles as of early October.
