New facilities inaugurated at Satakunta Air Command in Pirkkala enhance servicemen’s living conditions
The Satakunta Air Command has inaugurated new facilities in Pirkkala, significantly enhancing the living conditions for servicemen and women. Corporal Mikke Luttinen shared his experience, noting that with improved indoor air quality, the overall health of personnel has improved, resulting in less coughing observed among them. He expressed satisfaction with the new setup, stating it is a marked upgrade from the previous accommodations.
The new barracks feature modern amenities, including designated spaces for each individual to charge their phones, while the separation between beds provides added privacy. A formal opening ceremony took place recently, although many servicemen had already moved into the new quarters.
Captain Mikko Rastas highlighted the benefits of appropriate drying facilities for equipment, which will extend their lifespan. Each service member has access to a drying cabinet while also benefiting from improved ventilation—a feature that helps mitigate unpleasant odors from wet clothing.
The new complex also boasts a versatile activity room for sports and various leisure pursuits. Enhanced privacy is another significant improvement, with separate cubicles for toilets and showers. According to Rastas, each unit can be locked for personal privacy, which is a welcome change for all.
Colonel Markus Leivo, the commander of Satakunta Air Command, believes these improvements will bolster motivation and safety during service. Once renovations of the old premises are completed next year, the accommodation capacity is expected to rise to nearly 350 beds.
Investments in defense infrastructure in Finland for the upcoming year are projected to reach €400 million, addressing the need for suitable facilities as new equipment, such as the F-35 fighter jets, comes into service.
