Janine van den Boogaard, originally from the Netherlands, expressed her surprise at the significant role water has played in Norway since moving there with her husband, Robin. They relocated to Norway in search of safety but have encountered more water-related challenges than anticipated. The couple was among six individuals evacuated following a landslide in the Bromma area of Nesbyen early Sunday morning.

The landslide, occurring around 4:30 AM, did not affect any properties or people. Emergency services responded swiftly from both Flå and Nesbyen, and a police helicopter surveyed the area. The couple learned about the landslide from friends who inquired if they were safe; they had not felt or heard anything unusual, including the helicopters.

While the couple noted some heavy rain the evening prior, they did not expect significant consequences. They acknowledged that prolonged rainfall might raise concerns, but a single day of rain seemed harmless. This was especially alarming given their recent experience with severe weather events, including last year’s Storm Hans.

Climate change has increased the frequency and intensity of extreme weather conditions, leading to more flooding and landslides globally. With warmer temperatures, the atmosphere holds more moisture, causing heavier rainfall and potentially more severe landslides in hilly areas. Urban growth and tourism further heighten the risk of landslides due to greater pressure on natural landscapes.

The Nesbyen landslide measured approximately 400 meters long and 30 meters wide, with geotechnical experts indicating groundwater saturation as a key factor in the slide’s occurrence. Despite these challenges, the couple feels comfortable in their new home, appreciating the beauty of nature despite its unpredictability.
