Emergency services respond to propane tank situation in Norway’s Drammen
Emergency services are currently responding to a situation involving a buried propane tank. Authorities, including ambulances, firefighters, and police, are on site and evacuation efforts are underway. A safety perimeter has been established, extending 200 meters, leading to the temporary closure of several streets. Fortunately, no reports of injuries have been made.
Police operations leader Helene Sandquist indicated that while there is no immediate danger of explosion, the fire department seeks to examine the area for potential gas accumulation. Propane is heavier than air, which means it can settle along the ground, increasing the need for caution.
Local residents have been evacuated, and security barriers are in place; however, authorities confirm that no additional evacuations are needed at this time. Reports from the scene indicate a lack of dramatic tension. Nearby businesses, including Starbucks, McDonald’s, and Egon, have closed their doors, and anyone close to the gas leak has been instructed to leave.
Witness Vemund Sørstad shared his experience, noting that he was waiting for a bus and had only found the area normal two hours prior. Upon returning from work, he discovered the area had been cordoned off and all staff evacuated.
Firefighters are currently working to locate and seal the gas leak. Police emphasize that buses in the vicinity of the square have been removed and recommend that travelers check for updates on public transport via Brakar. The situation is still developing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
