Aalesund football club extends contracts of head coach Kjetil Rekdal and assistant Geir Frigård
Aalesund Football Club has announced the extension of head coach Kjetil Rekdal’s contract, along with his assistant Geir Frigård, during a press conference today at 12:30 PM. Initially signed only until the end of the season, their contracts now extend for an additional two years.
Rekdal returned to the club last summer when Aalesund was struggling near the bottom of the league table and at risk of relegation from the 1st division. He stepped in after the dismissal of Christian Johnsen and expressed that the team had only a 30% chance of avoiding relegation, describing the challenge as “extremely demanding,” with each game becoming crucial for survival.
At the time of his appointment, Aalesund had managed to secure just nine points after 14 matches. However, following Rekdal and Frigård’s takeover, the team’s performance improved significantly. They ultimately finished the season with 40 points, comfortably ensuring their status in the league.
This marks Rekdal’s second stint as Aalesund’s coach; he previously held the position from 2008 to 2012, leading the team to two cup victories during that time.
