Icelandic Green Left Party prioritizes housing and healthcare ahead of November elections
As the November 30 parliamentary elections approach in Iceland, political parties are ramping up their campaigns. The Green Left Party (Vinstri græn) recently unveiled their key priorities, focusing heavily on housing, healthcare, and environmental protection.
During a press briefing, Svandís Svavarsdóttir, the party leader, emphasized a vision centered around public welfare rather than profit. She criticized right-wing parties for advocating large-scale privatization and unsustainable energy practices, stating that Vinstri græn promotes laws and practices that uphold natural conservation, social justice, and equality—core values traditionally associated with leftist politics.
Housing was highlighted as the top concern, with an emphasis on providing safe and secure living conditions for residents rather than real estate investors. Suggestions included increasing the development of social housing, imposing rent controls, and collaborating with local municipalities to boost housing supply. The party also called for reforms in interest benefits and savings plans, aiming to curb real estate speculation.
In addition to housing issues, Vinstri græn advocated for a robust public healthcare system and an equitable education framework. As the weekend progresses, the parliament remains on recess, allowing representatives to focus on their election campaigns. The next parliamentary session is scheduled for tomorrow morning, where critical budget proposals and other legislative matters await discussion.
