The atmosphere was charged as Yusuf Abdilkadir’s commanding voice interrupted the ski training session of Ridwan “Ridu” Ahmed and Abas Ishetu. In an instant, Abdilkadir and Ishetu found themselves navigating a winding path together, despite lacking skis or vehicles. This scene unfolded in the premises of the Theatre Academy of the Arts in Helsinki, where the theater group Huuditeak was engaged in an improvisation exercise designed to refine their skills.

What sets this group apart is its composition of 13 members who have immigrant backgrounds, aiming to enhance diversity in the Finnish theater scene. Yusuf Abdilkadir initiated this initiative about a year ago, with the group guided by Jasir Osman, a recent graduate from the academy.

“Our initial goal was to practice our abilities so that we could eventually enroll in the Theatre Academy,” Abdilkadir explained. Many in the group have applied to the academy and continue to pursue their dreams.

The group actively works on improvisation and acting. While most members aspire to enter the industry, they face challenges in accessing opportunities, which they are determined to create for themselves. Abdilkadir highlighted the scarcity of representation within the field, noting a shift toward more inclusive storytelling.

Ridu Ahmed expressed his excitement about the evolving landscape, believing that the anticipation and pressure could energize their mission to share their unique narratives. Abdilkadir emphasized their goal of portraying diverse characters, rejecting stereotypes often seen in media.

The group meets weekly for intensive rehearsals aimed at fostering both focus and enjoyment. Abdilkadir shared how embracing improvisation has significantly boosted his confidence and social skills, helping him explore emotional depths previously untouched.
