Swedish parties face difficult coalition talks after Sunday’s election

Swedish parties will likely need to cooperate across the political spectrum to form a government after Sunday’s election, SVT reports.

SVT political reporter Tomas Nordenskiöld has outlined the possible governing combinations and which parties could work together after the vote.

In a televised prime ministerial debate on Wednesday, Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson did not rule out forming a minority government supported by shifting majorities in parliament.

“That is a possibility,” Andersson said during the debate with Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson.

Regardless of the election result, party leaders are expected to need support from other parties that clear the parliamentary threshold if they want to form a government and become Sweden’s next prime minister.

The central questions are which parties could cooperate, whether any could cross the traditional bloc divide and who might ultimately support whom.
