Mäkelä sparks discussion on social media after interview in Joutseno, Lappeenranta
On Monday morning, Member of Parliament Jani Mäkelä sparked discussion on social media platform X, sharing an article which he described as a simplistic representation, suitable for YLE’s average intelligence level. Hours later, an interview with Mäkelä was arranged at the library in his hometown, Joutseno, Lappeenranta.
During the interview, Mäkelä remained polite and engaged, answering questions thoughtfully. He took time afterward to converse with a ninth-grade student completing an internship at YLE, discussing the balance between a legislator’s responsibilities in Helsinki and family life in South Karelia.
Mäkelä’s public persona has drawn attention due to his contrasting communication styles: warm in person but often divisive online. When asked about the implications of his dual messaging, he declined to analyze his own tactics, suggesting that expertise from others was needed for such insights.
Two communication specialists later weighed in on Mäkelä’s varying public presentations. They recognized elements typical of right-wing populism in his strategy, where public communications are polished and often shield nuanced rhetoric from scrutiny.
Mäkelä highlighted significant legislative achievements during his tenure as the leader of a major political party’s parliamentary group, particularly a contested law allowing the deportation of asylum seekers under specific security conditions. Despite its contentious nature, he emphasized its importance for his political faction.
Addressing rising unemployment in his region, he advocated for the sustainability of traditional industries like forestry, emphasizing the urgent need to secure domestic timber supplies due to restrictions on imports from Russia.
