Nightclubs enforce winter coat policies in Finland to ensure patron safety
As winter approaches, several nightclubs are reminding patrons of their coat policies. For instance, the Fontana nightclub in Vaasa has enforced a rule mandating patrons to wear outerwear to gain entry, a practice established five years ago from October to March. This policy is similar at other NoHo Partners venues in Helsinki, including popular locations like Ilona, Allas Sea Pool, Teatteri, and Löyly. These establishments have upheld a winter coat requirement to ensure the safety and well-being of their guests as they exit.
Sanna Sandvall, a spokesperson for NoHo Partners, emphasized that the responsibility for guests’ safety extends beyond the confines of the restaurant. Fontana’s CEO, Susanna Tuohiniemi, noted the risks tied to allowing individuals to leave without proper winter attire, including potential injuries from slipping or severe cold exposure.
Security professionals view this coat requirement as a vital safety measure. Jarkko Savolainen, head of the Amicus security firm, expressed that insisting on this policy is rooted in care for patrons rather than inconvenience. He believes it should be standard across all establishments.
Fontana has actively communicated this requirement through social media, and staff have been informing guests at the door to avoid issues for newcomers, particularly students not aware of the dress code. Older patrons, who may not frequent nightclubs regularly, often find the policy surprising. Conversely, younger guests generally understand the necessity of dressing appropriately for winter.
While there is no additional fee for coats at some venues, the entry fee at Fontana remains constant, regardless of a patron’s outerwear situation. Nightclubs are also conscious of footwear choices, requiring appropriate options to ensure safety.
