Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen engaged with local residents during a coffee event held at a shopping center in Mikkeli, where discussions centered on Finland’s defense policy. Over the past year, Mikkeli has been a focal point in conversations about the potential establishment of a NATO land force subordinate command in the city.

At the end of September, Häkkänen announced that the Defense Ministry would recommend Mikkeli as the location for this command. “NATO will make an official decision next year. It’s standard protocol for other defense ministers to respect the proposal of the national defense minister regarding the location, so I am optimistic about this matter proceeding,” he remarked at the beginning of the coffee meeting.

During the gathering, attendees had the opportunity to pose questions to Häkkänen about various topics, including Mikkeli’s security situation. He assured that the establishment of the command would not compromise the city’s safety, but rather enhance it, emphasizing that there are no areas in Finland or NATO that are inherently unsafe.

Addressing the vitality of Eastern Finland as a security concern, he noted that while there are no quick fixes, a diverse set of businesses and job creation initiatives are essential. The NATO command would not resolve all issues but would elevate the city’s profile and international recognition.

Häkkänen also highlighted ongoing renewable energy projects in Eastern Finland as a means of fostering its vitality. He expressed confidence in the enduring defense relationship between Finland and the United States, particularly as political dynamics shift with the upcoming Trump administration.

Next week, Häkkänen will participate in a NATO defense ministers’ meeting in Brussels, where strengthening European defense will be a significant topic.
