Bleik sets new national milk production record at Gautsstöðum in Iceland
In a remarkable achievement for the Icelandic dairy industry, the cow Bleik, located at Gautsstöðum in Svalbarðsströnd, has set a new national record for milk production. As of October, Bleik reached a total of 114,731 kilograms of milk during her lifetime, surpassing the previous record by nearly 100 kilograms.
At 15 years old, Bleik stands out with an impressive daily production rate of over 27 kilograms, as measured at the end of October. She is bred from Grani Hersisson and Stássa Stássadóttir. Bleik had her first calf in 2011 and peaked in 2016 when she produced approximately 10,400 kilograms of milk within a single year.
This milestone reflects the growing capabilities of Iceland’s dairy cows, highlighting that Bleik is the first cow in Iceland to achieve such a high level of production. Her impressive stats contribute to a tradition of excellence in the dairy sector, as nine Icelandic milk cows have now produced over 100,000 liters throughout their lifetimes.
Bleik’s record not only exemplifies individual achievement in animal husbandry but also underscores the significance of sustainable farming practices in addressing the increasing demand for dairy in the region. As the industry evolves, such milestones serve as a testament to the focus on quality and productivity in Icelandic agriculture.
