Truck driver succumbs to injuries after accident on E6 highway near Heimsjøen, Norway
A truck was reported partially submerged in a body of water near a rest area along the E6 highway on Wednesday evening. The driver was airlifted to a hospital but unfortunately succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident.
Efforts to recover the truck commenced Thursday morning at Heimsjøen. Two tow trucks from Trøndelag Bilhjelp were dispatched to the scene. Karl Morten Flasnes, the incident commander from Trøndelag police, noted that the recovery operation faces additional challenges as the truck has drifted northeast in the lake. This situation requires the dismantling of a guardrail, as well as clearing some forest, to enable tow operators to retrieve the vehicle safely.
Authorities have not yet determined the details surrounding the crash. Investigations, both technical and witness-based, are underway to ascertain the cause of the incident.
The E6 highway has been closed to facilitate the recovery efforts, as larger vehicles essential for the operation will be present. Additionally, the accident investigation team from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration is on-site to conduct their inquiries. Motorists are advised to follow designated detour routes, which are well-marked in Steinkjer and Grong, with physical barriers set up in Vekset, Snåsa.
Flasnes indicated that the duration of the road closure is uncertain and dependent on the progress of the recovery work, although it is anticipated to last for an extended period. Meanwhile, rescue divers were dispatched from Trondheim to assist in securing the site and accessing the driver following the accident.
