Mika Sillanpää submits numerous complaints against LUT University five years after termination
Mika Sillanpää, a prominent figure in the field of engineering, continues to confront his former employer, LUT University, five years after the termination of his employment. This autumn, he has submitted a significant number of information requests and complaints to various authorities, including the police. His requests pertain to topics such as grievances lodged against LUT, information about previous colleagues and decision-makers regarding his employment, and his own expense reports.
Currently, there are approximately 100 active information requests, causing confusion among university administrators. Many of these requests target individuals Sillanpää previously reported to the police. Over the past few years, he has filed numerous criminal complaints against former colleagues and media outlets, although the exact number is uncertain due to the fact that not all lead to investigations.
Sillanpää, known for heading a green chemistry lab focused on water purification, was let go from LUT in 2019 over allegations of misuse of authority and financial misconduct. Additional scrutiny followed from Mikkeli’s development company, which also severed ties with him in early 2020.
As of late 2022, the frequency of his complaints subsided, only to resurge recently. The police have characterized the volume and nature of his reports as unusual, noting that one compilation alone exceeds 2,500 pages. Despite the multitude of allegations against him, all of the investigations have concluded without charges so far.
In the realm of academic integrity, LUT found that Sillanpää had violated good scientific practices during his tenure, having filed 17 reports against colleagues for similar offenses. However, these complaints have been deemed beyond the university’s jurisdiction since he is no longer employed there.
