Mosfellsbær allocates one hundred million krónur for youth violence prevention initiatives in Iceland
Mosfellsbær is taking significant action against the rising tide of violence within its community by allocating an additional one hundred million Icelandic krónur for preventive measures. Reports of child welfare issues in the municipality surged by 50% within a year, with 650 cases recorded in the first ten months of this year.
Today, the local initiative “Our Children” was launched in response to concerns raised during a public meeting last summer following the town’s festival. Parents voiced their distress over increasing violence and a stabbing incident that occurred during the celebration. The mayor highlighted the alarming impacts of alcohol and violence at community events, describing the atmosphere of unrest that followed the incidents.
The new initiative will direct extra funding towards programs aimed at reducing youth violence. The mayor noted the challenging landscape for child welfare services this year, citing a significant rise in reported cases of violence involving children, either as victims or perpetrators.
The municipality is home to approximately 13,700 residents, and if all local municipalities in the capital region contributed proportionally to this initiative, the total funding would amount to nearly two billion krónur. The action plan includes 27 specific measures, such as increasing recreational grants, offering regular parenting courses starting in the autumn, developing communication agreements between schools and families, and organizing public health projects along with open sports facilities on weekends and evenings. Additionally, funding will be provided to strengthen community youth centers.
