Following heavy rainfall, numerous landslides have occurred across Iceland’s Westfjords region since last night, resulting in blocked roads and challenges with water supply. The highways connecting Ísafjörður and Steingrímsfjarðarheiði have reopened, while the route through Eyrarhlíð remains closed as authorities work to manage the situation.

Water service in Bolungarvík has been restored, making it suitable for drinking and food processing, as confirmed on the municipality’s official website. Residents of Flateyri have been advised to conserve water, although some supply is being pumped into the local system. The restoration brings some relief after residents experienced disruptions due to contamination following the landslides.

Emergency shelters were quickly established in Ísafjörður and Bolungarvík for those unable to return home. These facilities were closed later in the evening once the necessity diminished. As conditions improved, road crews began clearing debris to restore access, targeting routes that had been blocked by mudslides, particularly around Eyrarhlíð.

In response to the severe weather warnings, the local government has urged residents near steep slopes, particularly along Hjallavegur and Hnífsdalsveg, to avoid rooms facing the hillside as a precaution. While the risk of additional slides remains significant, the region is also bracing for a change in weather with anticipated snowfall following the rain.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the dangers still present due to saturated ground and ongoing rain forecasts, urging community members to remain vigilant and prioritize safety.
