Musician Lauri Tähkä, whose real name is Jarkko Suo, is set to face a court hearing at the Turku Court of Appeal on Wednesday at 10 a.m. The proceedings are scheduled to last for three days. Tähkä is accused of coercing someone into a sexual act, allegedly occurring over two years ago in his hotel room in Hämeenlinna after a performance.

According to Tähkä’s lawyer, Riitta Leppiniemi, Tähkä has consistently maintained his innocence, asserting that he has not engaged in any illegal behavior as alleged by the prosecution. Last October, the Kanta-Häme District Court acquitted Tähkä of the charges. However, the prosecution and the complainant appealed the decision.

The prosecutor has chosen not to comment on the appellate process at this time. Leppiniemi indicated that the same evidence presented in the lower court will be reviewed at the appeal, with 16 witnesses, the complainant, and Tähkä himself scheduled to testify, with Tähkä’s appearance set for Wednesday afternoon.

The appeal court will base its ruling on the same evidence evaluated by the district court. After a divided vote of 1-1 in the previous court, where the less severe opinion prevailed leading to Tähkä’s acquittal, one judge had advocated for a three-month suspended sentence while the prosecution sought at least an eight-month suspended sentence. The district court’s ruling remains confidential as the case was ordered to be entirely sealed.

This legal battle has extended over a year, with a decision from the appeals court expected within a month. Leppiniemi remarked that prolonged legal proceedings can be challenging for all parties involved.
