Study reveals link between gambling addiction and health issues in Finland
A recent study from Finland reveals a significant correlation between gambling addiction and various health issues. Those diagnosed with gambling addiction are notably more likely to suffer from a range of diseases than the general population. The research indicates that 88% of individuals with a gambling addiction diagnosis experience mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Additionally, around two-thirds of those diagnosed have musculoskeletal disorders. Other prevalent health concerns among those with gambling addiction include digestive system diseases and cardiovascular issues, with neurological conditions affecting 27% of the participants.
Between 2011 and 2022, the study analyzed the health records of 3,605 adults diagnosed with gambling addiction, marking it as the first comprehensive examination of this issue from a public health perspective. The findings, published in a scientific journal, emphasize that gambling addiction is often underdiagnosed. Researchers point out that early recognition and dialogue about this condition are crucial in healthcare settings.
The disparity in health statuses suggests that many individuals suffering from gambling addiction may not be receiving necessary social and healthcare services. Stigma surrounding the addiction can hinder individuals from seeking help.
Although the study establishes a connection between gambling addiction and various illnesses, it does not clarify the nature of the relationship—whether the addiction leads to the health issues or vice versa remains uncertain. Further research is currently underway to explore this dynamic, particularly focusing on anxiety disorders among those with gambling problems, which could either be exacerbated by the addiction or serve as a coping mechanism.
