The 2024 parliamentary elections in Iceland have prompted leaders to reflect on past governmental collaborations. Vainí Svavarsdóttir, the head of the Left-Green Movement, discussed the party’s political stance during a recent interview. She emphasized the party’s commitment to social justice, peace advocacy, equality, and environmental protection as fundamental principles guiding their future actions.

In her conversation, Svavarsdóttir revisited the decision made in 2021 to renew the coalition with the Independence Party and the Progressive Party, suggesting that a government spanning both the right and left may not be suited to serve beyond a single term. She acknowledged the significant challenges the Left-Green Movement faced, particularly after taking over leadership following the departure of former chair Katrín. Svavarsdóttir recently returned from a health-related leave, having been diagnosed with breast cancer, adding to the burden of leadership during a period of low polling numbers.

Addressing the decision to ban whaling last summer and the party’s climate change initiatives, Svavarsdóttir admitted that their performances could have been more impactful. She reiterated the importance of housing policy reform, robust healthcare services, and advocating for peaceful resolutions on an international level, insisting that the government must actively support social housing development.

Lastly, Svavarsdóttir affirmed the party’s dedication to accountability in politics, noting that their achievements arise from balanced decision-making and ongoing efforts, even if progress sometimes appears incremental.
