Landslide activity leads to road closures in Westfjords following heavy rainfall
The landslide activity in the Westfjords has prompted several road closures following heavy rainfall. The region has witnessed multiple landslides since last night due to saturated ground conditions. The route through Ísafjarðardjúp has been shut down indefinitely, and the Eyrarhlíð road between Hnífsdal and Ísafjörður was closed after a significant landslide occurred around 3 PM.
In Bolungarvík and Ísafjörður, emergency assistance centers were quickly established to support those unable to return home. These centers were closed later in the evening as the need diminished. The Súðavíkurhlíð will also remain closed until tomorrow morning because of risks associated with rockfalls.
Local resident Haraldur Hákonarson described hearing the landslide near his home, expressing a calm demeanor despite the situation. He noted that everyone staying with him will remain indoors until conditions improve.
As rain is expected to taper off overnight, meteorologist Óliver Hilmarsson highlighted ongoing concerns about potential further slides, especially in areas with steep inclines where water runoff has left the soil unstable. Alerts are in place regarding water quality due to contamination from the landslides, prompting residents of Hnífsdal to store water as a precaution.
In Ivafjörður, rapid efforts are underway to ensure the safety of roads and transport as authorities monitor weather patterns. The emergency response continues to adapt as conditions evolve, reflecting the community’s resilience amid these environmental challenges.
