Heavy rainfall in the Westfjords of Iceland since last night has triggered multiple landslides, leading to road closures. The Ísafjarðardjúp road has been shut since the early hours today, and it is uncertain when it will reopen. The route over Eyrarhlíð, connecting Hnífsdalur and Ísafjörður, was closed around 3 PM following a landslide. A second landslide later today prompted authorities to keep this road closed until at least tomorrow.

In response to the closures, emergency assistance centers are being established in Ísafjörður and Bolungarvík for those unable to return home. These centers will be located in local schools, and residents in need are advised to head there until they can be accommodated. The Red Cross is assisting with staffing at these locations.

Additionally, officials have warned residents in Hnífsdalur of potential damage to water pipes due to landslides. Alerts have been sent out to encourage people to fill containers with water in case of further disruptions. The water supply has also been compromised in Bolungarvík and Flateyri.

Authorities confirmed that heavy rain continues to pose a risk of further landslides. Residents are urged to stay alert and cautious, particularly under steep slopes or where water accumulates. Weather forecasts suggest that the rainfall may decrease later in the evening.

As the situation develops, updates will be provided regarding road conditions and emergency shelters.
