A mother has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after taking the life of her six-year-old son at their home in Kópavogur earlier this year. The court found that while she suffered from severe depression, she was not deemed to be legally insane at the time of the act.

The tragic incident occurred in January when the woman called emergency services, seeking police assistance. Despite her mental health issues, three court-appointed experts concluded she was aware of her actions when she smothered her son with a pillow and attempted to harm her eleven-year-old son.

The mother’s difficult life experiences, including her background as a refugee and feelings of helplessness and despair while living in Iceland, contributed to the tragic events. Her older son reported waking up to his mother trying to suffocate him but returned to sleep, heading to school the next day unaware of the tragedy that had befallen his younger brother. School officials later informed him of his sibling’s death.

During police interrogations, the mother expressed a belief that her sons could ascend to heaven before her own death. The court characterized her actions, which have profoundly affected the older son’s future, as being deeply troubling and reckless.

In addition to her prison sentence, the mother was ordered to pay three million Icelandic krónur in damages to the boys’ father and five million krónur to her surviving son. This case marks the heaviest sentence given to a woman for a similar crime in Iceland in over a century.
