Johnny Madsen will be laid to rest in Thyborøn, the town where he spent his childhood and first strummed the strings of his guitar. The ceremony will be conducted by his close friend Hanne Davidsen, who has known the musician personally since 1973, introduced through her husband, a long-time friend of Madsen. This farewell at Thyborøn Church is particularly meaningful, considering Madsen’s private nature about themes of love and faith.

Hanne reflects on her experiences with farewells, having buried loved ones such as her sister and father, and acknowledges the emotional toll of these moments. As a priest, she finds a measure of protection in her role, allowing her to manage her feelings while honoring Madsen properly. Despite having stepped back from her clerical duties four years earlier, she is prepared to guide the service, which will blend elements of a speech and a sermon.

In the past week, tributes have poured in for Madsen, who passed away at the age of 73. Friends highlight his generosity and warm character. Hanne recounts how Madsen’s visits would fill her home with joy and humor, centered around his engaging stories.

Even in sickness, during their recent visits, Madsen maintained a bond that reflected his faith. After his passing, flowers were laid at his gallery on Fanø, with many remembering him as a resonant figure through popular songs and television appearances. Hanne appreciates how Madsen addressed life’s fundamental truths in an original and poetic manner, even as he remained a complex individual who could be challenging at times.
