Finland could become the main obstacle to the Faroe Islands gaining full membership of the Nordic Council, KVF reports. The issue is due to be considered at the Council’s annual meeting in Helsinki later this month.

The Faroese request for full membership will be discussed at the meeting, which is less than two weeks away. Johan Dahl, a former member of the Nordic Council’s presidium, said Finland could stand in the way.

In October 2024, the Council’s annual meeting in Reykjavík unanimously approved a recommendation to amend the Helsinki Treaty, which currently prevents the Faroe Islands from becoming a full member. A committee was then appointed to prepare a final recommendation for the meeting in Helsinki.
