Ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections in late November, voters in South Constituency are emphasizing the importance of economic and healthcare issues. A recent survey of voters revealed that none had made a final decision regarding their preferred political party.
As the local broadcast network prepares for a live political program from Grindavík featuring representatives from all parties, five voters shared their primary concerns. These include pressing topics such as economic conditions, healthcare, transportation, and education.
Ari Jónsson, a senior citizen and former mechanical engineer, voiced serious concerns about the current high-interest rates in Iceland, describing the situation as untenable. He urged politicians to prioritize infrastructure development and establish regulations for wind energy while also advocating for a public referendum on continued EU membership talks.
Sigríður Þorbjörnsdóttir, a kindergarten director in her forties, highlighted education and child welfare, expressing the need to reduce the working hours for preschool children to ensure their well-being.
Ágúst Óli Hróðmarsson, a mason in his fifties, prioritized youth mental health and services for adolescents, indicating he is close to deciding on a party aligned with public health issues.
Oddný Sigurrós Gunnarsdóttir, a 39-year-old with a part-time job in retail, echoed the importance of addressing healthcare challenges, especially for vulnerable populations, while remaining cautious about the economic environment.
Finally, Gylfi Hauksson, a sales representative in his sixties, criticized local policies and expressed a distrust in the political system after a challenging year. He is considering his options but has clearly ruled out certain parties due to their positions on environmental policies.
