Icelandic politician Jón Gunnarsson has called for an investigation into what he terms serious espionage involving his son. The controversy arose from recordings of a meeting between his son and an unidentified individual, which discussed Iceland’s whaling practices.

Gunnarsson shared details of the situation on social media, alleging that a well-organized deception had been carried out over recent weeks by a foreign man posing as a Swiss investor. This man had contacted Gunnarsson’s son, a real estate agent, expressing interest in investing in properties in Iceland. He subsequently traveled to the country to meet with the politician’s son.

Gunnarsson has accused this individual of having ulterior motives, claiming that the goal was to eavesdrop on his son and capture secret and unlawful recordings of conversations about whaling. He noted that two journalists contacted him and his son to inquire about this alleged investment discussion. Despite their probes, Gunnarsson admitted to having no knowledge of the man or connections to the journalists.

Gunnarsson highlighted the seriousness of the matter, asserting that if police do not see a clear reason to investigate on their own initiative, it constitutes a significant threat to democracy, as it involves gathering information for political purposes. The fallout from this situation has taken a toll on his family, underscoring the broader implications for political integrity and security in Iceland.
