Today marks the beginning of the transfer of ancient manuscripts from the Árni Magnússon Institute to the Edda House, a center dedicated to Icelandic culture. Twenty manuscripts are being relocated, with a goal to have all items moved by Christmas.

Guðvarður Már Guðlaugsson, head of the cultural department at the Árni Magnússon Institute, emphasized the extensive security measures in place to ensure the safety of these historical artifacts. The manuscripts will be transported in a secured vehicle, accompanied by police protection.

Each manuscript is being carefully packed to prevent damage during the move, and they will be stored in a large, climate-controlled room at Edda House, where temperature and humidity levels will be continuously monitored. The collection is vast, consisting of over two thousand manuscripts and additional ancient letters, all organized in individual boxes.

The public will have the chance to view these manuscripts starting Saturday at 2 PM during a newly opened exhibition titled “World in Words.” This showcase will not only display the manuscripts but will also provide printed information and touchscreen displays about their significance. The exhibition aims to highlight the rich content of the manuscripts, which includes both text and illustrations, while also discussing the foreign influences on Icelandic culture during the medieval period. It will delve into how Icelandic literature has made its mark internationally. The anticipation surrounding this collection reflects a growing interest from both locals and visitors to engage with Iceland’s literary heritage.
