Many are bracing for price surges by closely monitoring market rates and wind forecasts, or by investing in solar panels and batteries to mitigate the impact of rising costs.

A practical solution to manage electricity consumption is through home automation systems. An often-overlooked product is the variable electricity relay, which can be installed directly into electrical panels or appliances. This device tracks real-time electricity prices and directs connected appliances to operate during the lowest-cost hours. It is particularly effective for appliances like water heaters and underfloor heating systems. Users can set specific hours for devices to be operational and can also establish a price ceiling. For instance, if the maximum set price is three cents per kilowatt-hour, the system will halt electricity consumption for connected heating if prices exceed that threshold.

Matti Nieminen, a resident in a historic wooden house in Tampere, switched to variable electricity over a year ago, aiming to avoid hefty winter bills. With a family consisting of his wife and two young children, Nieminen upgraded his heating system and incorporated a relay for his water heater, allowing him to capitalize on favorable pricing. Despite increased overall energy usage, Nieminen reports significant reductions in electricity bills, emphasizing the value of utilizing cheaper hours.

Though the market for these smart electricity management products is still emerging, sales are on the rise as more options become available. Among the most popular items are thermostats designed for floor heating, which can be programmed to operate during low-cost periods, helping households save substantially on energy expenses.
