When Tomi Ek received an invitation to meet with Elina Pylkkänen, the Deputy Secretary at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, he immediately began considering strategies for the meeting. Acknowledging the humility of the gesture, Ek aimed to approach the conversation positively, seeking to discuss potential solutions rather than focusing on negativity.

The 44-year-old former CEO from Vantaa had applied for approximately 250 jobs over the past two years without success. After sharing his story in October, he received over a hundred responses and three job interview invitations on the same day the story was published. Now, Ek is weighing his options as various opportunities arise.

Pylkkänen, responsible for employment and labor policy, expressed her surprise that someone like Ek struggles to find work, particularly amid discussions about skill shortages in the country. She, along with her colleagues, is eager to explore ways to improve the situation, especially as unemployment continues to rise during the economic downturn.

Ek presented concrete suggestions aimed at enhancing the job search process, including the incorporation of comprehensive information about work experience and skills into personalized employment plans. Pylkkänen acknowledged the need for continuous improvement to align the labor market demands more effectively.

The conversation shifted to the realities faced by job seekers. Ek highlighted that many job postings contain overly stringent requirements that make them feel unattainable. He emphasized that companies should present clearer job descriptions to encourage applications.

As the meeting drew to a close, it became apparent that the roles had reversed, with Ek, now in a rush to attend entrance exams for a higher education program, exemplifying the urgency of his situation.
