In a recent exchange, Jón Gunnarsson, a member of the Icelandic Parliament, accused a media outlet of engaging in deceptive practices and espionage against him and his family. He alleges that they aimed to gather information about him and whaling from his son. Expressing his concerns on Facebook, Jón stated that a carefully orchestrated scheme has emerged over recent weeks, involving a foreign individual posing as a Swiss investor who contacted Jón’s son, a real estate agent, expressing interest in investing in properties in Iceland.

The alleged investor subsequently visited the country and met with Jón’s son. However, it was revealed last week that this individual misrepresented himself and had been misleading Jón’s son for weeks without any intention to conduct actual business. Instead, the alleged goal was to spy on his son and secretly obtain illegal recordings of discussions concerning Jón and whaling.

Moreover, two journalists from the media outlet in question reached out to both Jón and his son for clarification regarding the details of the son’s conversation with the supposed investor. Following their inquiries, a dedicated website for the investment fund was shut down. Jón criticized the journalists for asking questions that seemed rooted in the conversation held between his son and the alleged investor, especially regarding claims that he leveraged his political position for whaling permits. He emphasized that assistants in his current role lack the authority to make such regulations.

In light of these events, Jón announced intentions to file a formal complaint. As of now, the journalists involved have not responded to requests for comment.
