The newly elected President of Finland will implement slight modifications to Yle’s Independence Day programming for 2024. The inaugural Independence Day reception hosted by Alexander Stubb and Suzanne Innes-Stubb is set for December 6, 2024. This year, Yle’s broadcast of the “Linnan juhlat” (Castle Ball) will begin five minutes earlier than usual, at 18:45. Due to the request of veteran organizations, war veterans will not attend the Independence Day reception, as a separate event for them will be organized on December 2. Highlights from the veterans’ celebration will be included in the main broadcast.

Celebrations on Yle’s channels and online start early in the day and continue into the night. A pre-event, the “Tuntematon sotilas” reading marathon, will begin on December 5 at 17:00 to mark the 70th anniversary of Väinö Linna’s classic work. The marathon will feature 60 well-known Finnish figures reading the book aloud, commencing with President Sauli Niinistö.

On December 6, starting at 12:00, a traditional parade will take place in Lappeenranta, with live commentary available on Yle’s platforms. The Radio Symphony Orchestra will also host a concert featuring new Finnish compositions alongside classic works.

Later, the “Linnan jatkot” (Castle Afterparty) will take place at 22:15, showcasing popular Finnish artists and hosted by Emma Karasjoki and Mikko Kekäläinen. Yle Radio Suomi will broadcast events throughout the day, including interviews with guests at the independence reception.

For viewers online, Yle’s app and website will feature chats, games, and highlights from the day’s events, ensuring a comprehensive celebration of Finnish Independence Day.
