Surge in sexual offenses reported in Tampere as police record 834 incidents this year
The number of sexual offenses reported to the police in Tampere has surged dramatically, with over double the incidents compared to last year. Between January and October, police recorded 834 sexual offenses in the city, up from 376 during the same period last year, according to statistics from the Police Board.
Pasi Nieminen, chief inspector of the South Savo Police Department, noted that this year, several extensive series of child-targeted sexual offenses are under investigation in Tampere. These cases contribute significantly to the overall increase in reported offenses, as they involve multiple victims.
Nieminen explained that such large-scale crimes against children have become more common, attributing this trend to the relative ease of committing these offenses in today’s society, often resulting in multiple victims. “This is a phenomenon that unfortunately seems likely to stay,” he said.
Additionally, reports of less severe sexual offenses have also increased. The sexual offense law was reformed at the beginning of 2023, leading to changes in crime classifications and criteria. Nieminen indicated that the reform has partially influenced the increase in sexual offenses recorded in statistics, with a noticeable impact across nearly all crime categories. The reporting of lesser sexual offenses has become more frequent, often involving cases where the victim knows the perpetrator.
Nieminen suggested that the threshold for reporting such incidents may have lowered. However, he cautioned against making too direct conclusions about the effects of the new legislation on these trends, noting that a thorough analysis would be required to determine the concrete impact of the law reform.
