Russian air defense destroys 32 drones in largest attack on Moscow amid escalating conflict
Early on Sunday morning, Russian air defense systems destroyed 32 drones in areas surrounding Moscow, according to the city’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. This incident is described as the largest attack yet on the capital, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.
In early September, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported intercepting 144 Ukrainian drones across various regions, 20 of which were flying over Moscow, then considered the most extensive assault on the city since the start of the war. Andrei Vorobyov, the governor, stated that one woman sustained shrapnel injuries due to the latest attack, which also resulted in two houses catching fire.
Ukraine has not yet commented on the recent events. However, reports suggest that Ukrainian forces have intensified their drone attacks following setbacks on the battlefield. Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi emphasized that drones are a key priority for the military moving forward, highlighting the rapid development of drone technology and the need to stay ahead of the enemy.
Additionally, sources indicated that Ukrainian strikes successfully targeted a facility linked to the Russian arms industry in Tula, western Russia. Meanwhile, President Zelenskyy stated that Russia has launched ten times as many kamikaze drones against Ukraine this fall compared to the previous year. As the Russian offensive continues in the east, a wave of drone attacks has also been reported in cities far from the front lines, with only one night in the past two months going without such incidents.
