The Finance Committee of the Faroese Parliament has agreed to support a proposal from Dennis Holm, the Minister of Finance, to allocate an additional 33 million DKK to the Fámjin Tunnel project.
With this increase, the total estimated cost is set to rise to 285 million DKK. The initial budget approved in 2021 was 169 million DKK.
There have been three rock bursts in the tunnel, which have significantly increased the project’s costs. These incidents are a primary reason for the escalated expenses compared to original estimates.
The legislative proposal also highlights other issues that contribute to rising costs, including post-assessments, accounting, compensation, rock slips, rock blasting, and necessary adjustments related to the surrounding terrain.
The last blast in the tunnel occurred on July 18.
