Breast cancer screening participation increases in Iceland with disparities among women
Participation in breast cancer screening programs showed improvement last year, with more women attending than in the previous year. The participation rate reached 56%, which marks an increase of four percentage points from 2022, as reported by the Chief Epidemiologist’s Office. However, the target participation level remains at 75%.
A significant disparity exists between Icelandic women and those with foreign citizenship regarding their screening participation rates. Approximately 61% of Icelandic women attended screenings, compared to only 18% of women from abroad.
Last year, the highest participation rates were reported in East Iceland, North Iceland, and the Westfjords, while the lowest rates were observed in the Reykjanes region. Cost has been a barrier for many women; however, this issue has been addressed with a recent reduction in the screening fee from 6,000 ISK to just 500 ISK, effective mid-October.
Breast cancer screening is a quick process, and authorities are keen to encourage higher participation to ultimately improve health outcomes.
